Overview Under general supervision the Deputy Probation Officer performs professional work in the investigation of adult offenders or juvenile court referrals; supervises probationers; participates in the institutional care, custody, treatment, and counseling. Base pay range $89,846.00/yr - $109,202.00/yr This is a limited continuous filing exam. Participate in institutional care, custody, treatment, and counseling. Apply knowledge of probation work, social and correctional case work, laws relating to criminal justice, causes of crime and delinquency, counseling techniques, interviewing, crisis intervention, self-defense, arrest procedures, and appropriate use of force and security techniques. Prepare concise and clear reports; maintain records; communicate with individuals from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Read, write, and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university, preferably with a degree in social or behavioral sciences. AND Either: One year of full-time paid professional experience in correctional work subsequent to the degree in a County, State or Federal probation, parole or law enforcement agency. Or: One year of social casework experience subsequent to the degree in a County, State, or Federal agency. Or: One year as an Assistant Probation Officer (formerly Probation Assistant) with Sacramento County. Or: The equivalent of one year as a Probation Aide (On-Call) with Sacramento County. Notes If the word "experience" is referenced in the minimum qualifications, it means full-time paid experience unless stated otherwise. Part-time paid experience may be pro-rated to meet total requirements. On-Call experience is converted as specified in the notice. Educational or certificate/license requirements must be proven with the application. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable. Special Requirements include Government Code compliance, criminal history and background checks, PST/POST training within one year after appointment, and other conditions. Be fingerprinted for background checks; provide required fingerprints to DOJ and FBI. Be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition affecting performance as a peace officer. Criminal History and Background Check: Appointees must pass a criminal history and background check; felony conviction may disqualify. Certificate Requirement: Completion of required P.O.S.T. training for Probation Officers within one year of appointment. Arming: Some assignments may require willingness and capacity to be armed, including psychological evaluation and training. Physical Requirements: Incumbents perform physical tasks and may face hazardous situations; strength, coordination, and endurance required. Driver's License: Valid California Driver License Class C or higher required at appointment; failure to maintain license may lead to dismissal. Hours of Work: Irregular hours, holidays, and weekends may be required. Probationary Period – The probationary period is six (6) months.
