Position: Chief Operating Officer

Location: Washington, DC

Status: Full-time, Exempt, 40 hours/week

Reports to: President and Executive Director

Supervises: Vice Presidents

Term: Immediately

Salary: $175,000$225,000

Our mission is to advance the civil and human rights of Asian Americans and to build and promote a fair and equitable society for all. We work on policy advocacy, litigation, research, public education, and community engagement. AAJC is a member of the Asian Americans Advancing Justice affiliation and collaborates with affiliates in Atlanta, Chicago, and Southern California.

Position overview

The Chief Operating Officer is a newly created role that works closely with the President and Executive Director to manage the executive team and oversee internal operations. The COO guides organizational priorities and coordinates the work of the Vice Presidents, while serving as a sounding board and adviser to the President and Executive Director.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day operations ensuring efficiency, effectiveness, and alignment with the executive team across policy, programs, budget, finance, and grants; communicate with the President and Executive Director as appropriate.
  • Act as thought partner to implement AAJCs mission, strategic plan, and program goals.
  • Keep the President and Executive Director informed and involved in key decisions as needed by day-to-day events and performance.
  • Lead and coordinate strategic meeting preparation and follow-up.
  • Oversee the executive team and communicate leadership updates to the President and Executive Director.
  • Foster an engaged leadership culture and cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Guide prioritization of institutional goals and drive continuous improvement to optimize workflows and ensure timely plan development and execution.
  • Monitor organizational culture, staff well-being, project statuses, strategic priorities, opportunities, and challenges for the President and Executive Director.

  • Be available to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends.

Educational and professional experience

  • Bachelors degree required. JD or advanced degree in business, public administration, organizational management, nonprofit management, or related field highly preferred.
  • At least 15 years of progressive management experience in nonprofit operations related to this position.
  • Broad knowledge of public policy, organizational planning, and management.
  • Ability to meet internal and external deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with Asian American, civil and/or human rights issues preferred.
