Job Description

Overview Base pay range: $85,795.00/yr - $132,901.00/yr. The Colorado Attorney General’s Office is seeking talented attorneys to join diverse practice areas. This is a general recruitment to fill current and future Assistant Attorney General vacancies within the Department of Law. Applications are welcome from both residents and non-residents of Colorado. What You Will Do The Assistant Attorney General provides legal advice, counsel, and representation to officials, agencies, boards, and commissions of the State government. Essential duties include, but are not limited to: Litigation Duties: Prosecute and/or defend criminal and civil litigation involving State agencies, employees, administrators, or elected officials; defend the State in tort cases; assist District Attorneys and manage settlement funds. Administrative Procedure Duties: Prosecute and/or defend Administrative Procedures Act quasi-judicial matters; assist agencies with hearings and compliance; represent State agencies at hearings and rule-making proceedings; handle appeals and judicial reviews. Advisory Duties: Provide legal advice to State agencies and prepare drafts for official opinions. Administrative Duties: Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, leases, deeds, easements, permits, licenses, and other instruments; review legislation and regulations; appear before legislative committees; participate in multi-state cases and trainings. Lead Duties: Lead and supervise staff; occasionally monitor or assist less experienced attorneys. Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree. License to practice law in Colorado, or eligibility to waive into the Colorado Bar. Strong legal research, case management, and investigative skills; experience in trial work in State and Federal courts; ability to draft rules, legislation, briefs, and pleadings; ability to manage case loads and work with expert witnesses. Ability to lead staff and maintain effective working relationships with State officials, opposing attorneys, courts, and colleagues within the Department of Law. Excellent writing, interpersonal, and communication skills. Additional Abilities Ability to prepare, file, and argue cases; adapt to unanticipated situations; create clear legal documents and reports. Minimum Qualifications and Conditions of Employment Must pass a thorough background investigation prior to appointment. Colorado Bar admission or eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar; if waiving, provide proof of completion before first day of employment.
